Paul Curreri Look for Music

Paul Curreri gives us what too few other songwriters can -- real stories to follow, real words to listen to, all bound tight in invigorating guitar and harmonica. His brilliance, like his lovely voice, is quiet and relaxed enough to almost distract you from its intensity. But it hits you soon, and hard, that you're hearing something exquisite. - Matt Dellinger, The New Yorker Magazine

Anyone who's seen Paul shock a noisy barroom into silence has experienced what it must have been like to see Dylan breaking onto the folk scene in the early '60s - though his charisma, surrealistic lyrics, and beat-angel voice are without precedent. - Brady Earnhart, Charlottesville songwriter, James Madison University Poetry Professor

Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Paul now makes his home in Charlottesville. He grew up playing music but ended up enrolling at Rhode Island School of Design to pursue painting and film. By the time Paul graduated from RISD, he'd composed over 200 songs on guitar and piano. Turning down an editing job at -- "ironically and hysterically" -- MTV, he set to work carving out a life as a musician.

 2010   Paul Curreri   California
“13 intimate, luminously produced tracks, and his multi-instrumental skills consistently impress…at their best, give (Dylan, Joe Henry, and Springsteen) a run for their money.” - MOJO Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Paul Curreri now makes his home in Charlottesville. California is Paul Curreri’s first album in three years, the result of having to take off over 15 months when major throat surgery took him off the road and out of the recording studio. A noted producer, he’s also helmed a number... More>>>

2004   Paul Curreri   The Spirit of the Staircase
(City Salvage Records) “[Spirit is] a great album, full of soul and originality… hushed insight. Curreri’s complex picking manages to pack in hooks as a result of mere instinct… furrowing a sonic field few musicians would be admitted to at this time. Desert blues, plain and simple. And all the better for it.” -- Americana-UK "Curreri is an able storyteller, with words sounding at once spontaneous and poetic, twisting guitar parts, and shuffling rhythmic patterns. Playing unpredictably,... More>>>

2002   Paul Curreri   From Long Gones to Hawkmoth
(City Salvage Records) Curreri's lyrics and guitar work play with you a little before revealing the big secret: He seems to be having a pretty good time with all this, which seems almost blasphemous in the oftentimes sad, serious world of the singer-songwriter. His songs dance around the blues, kick around the country and end up laughing, sometimes joyfully in the ditch. -- Style Weekly BEST LOCAL SOLO MUSICIAN 2001 -- Curreri can be just as elusive and charismatic as a 1962 Dylan... and...
