| JOEL MABUS
"His sharp writing and soft singing have an amused and gently knowing
quality that suggest Garrison Keillor or Jean Shepherd. In fact,
Mabus might've simply become a storyteller, had he not wielded such a
rock-solid guitar pick, versatile among several traditional genres."
- Performing Songwriter
"One of the hottest pickers around, up there with Doc Watson and
Norman Blake. The best picking I've heard in ages." - Cathy Fink
"It's not just a wealth of musical styles or his smooth and
expressive voice that have made Mabus such a fine artist. His songs,
which range from thoughtful to silly to poetic, show that he knows
his way around the English language and American culture just as well
as he knows his way around a fretboard." - Jeff Garrity, Capital Times
Joel's parents, Gerald and Ruby, were professional performers in the
1930's on "WLS Prairie Farmer Barn Dance" road shows. His dad and
uncle, (Gerald & Jerald Lee - identical twins) played fiddle tunes
and old-time country songs all over Illinois and much of the Midwest
before the war.
While Joel "cut his teeth" on old-time and bluegrass music, his
horizons soon expanded. A teen in the turbulent 1960's, Joel was
exploring blues and jazz, Celtic music, and the folk-protest songs of
the era. From the beginning, Joel has been recognized for his ability
to shine on any one of several instruments.
At festivals he's been paired in workshops with such artists as Doc
Watson, Norman Blake, Mark O'Connor, and the late Jethro Burns. For
several years his music was the theme for Public Radio's syndicated
"Folk Sampler with Mike Flynn," and Joel was a frequent guest on
Garrison Keillor's first incarnation of "A Prairie Home Companion."
His anti-war song, "Touch A Name On The Wall" has been performed by
decorated veterans and jailed protesters alike. His contradance tune,
"The Blue Jig," though never recorded, is an underground "hit" among
contradance bands on two continents, passed from player to player.
Joel Mabus is hard to categorize. A link between the traditional and
contemporary - a singer-songwriter living down the reputation of a
hot picker - Joel would prefer to shuck all the labels and just play. |

Parlor Guitar
| An all-instrumental album of fingerstyle arrangements of some classic tunes. "Parlor Guitar" has a double meaning: The guitar Joel plays on this recording is known as a parlor guitar -- smaller in size than the modern acoustic guitar. A century ago, the small guitar was the normal size -- meant for drawing rooms. Secondly, the melodies on this album are from the "parlor song era" -- the early 20th and late 19th centuries (basically before radio and electrical recording).

Golden Willow Tree
| Here you have for your amusement & edification a collection of banjo tunes, ballads and prairie serenades. Rivers run through it and birds fly above it while life's indelible issues persist. The willow tree is made of roots & branches - the roots solid in the past, drinking from deep hidden waters while the branches are ever-spreading, shaped by wind & weather. So am I - planted here with my feet on the ground and my head in the sky, stretching my limbs once again to share the music that both... More>>> |
