Karen Mal |

|
|
Originally from Plainville, Connecticut, more recently from
Wisconsin, Karen worked in regional theatre for several years as an
actor and musical director/composer before settling in Austin, Texas
to play music full-time. She has become one of the most sought-after
performers around, both as a solo artist and as a sideman for others
on mandolin, guitar, and harmony vocals.
"Karen Mal's songs are like the old time remedy that mixed honey and
lemon....They are sweet without being precious and have a lasting
bite to them that makes them both memorable and good for you. Add a
voice to match, and you have a musical panacea, curing our ills and
adding to the grace of living."

Dark Eyed Sailor

"Largely known as a
fine American singer-songwriter and excellent mandolinist, Karen Mal on this
recording indulges her love of songs largely gleaned from the Irish and English
tradition. She is blessed with a voice that encompasses the seductive beauty
of Kate Rusby, the Irish-influenced vocal decorations of Cathie Ryan, and the
appealing vulnerability of Iris Dement, yet is uniquely her own."

(Boar's Nest Records, 2002,
Reissued on Waterbug, 2004)
"Karen has a real gift for
words, for literary devices. Even sharper,
Mal shows a real sensitivity for complex human thoughts and
relationships in her songs... People who follow Texas songwriters
will love this album."
-Folkwax
